ACRN Hypervisor
What it is
ACRN Hypervisor is a free, open-source reference hypervisor for embedded IoT development. It is a Type 1 stack that runs directly on Intel x86 bare-metal hardware. Guest virtual machines can run Linux, Windows, Zephyr, VxWorks, Xenomai, Celadon, or Android, and nested virtualization is supported. ACRN provides CPU, I/O, and networking virtualization, with I/O mediators for sharing graphics and audio across virtual machines. Resource partitioning is intended to let safety-critical and non-safety-critical domains coexist on one system-on-chip. The project also defines the ACRN Device Model for virtual device emulation. Its codebase is described as less than 40K lines, with low latency, fast boot times, and responsive hardware communication listed as performance goals. Management uses a command-line interface. Source code is available under the BSD 3-Clause license, with online documentation, public GitHub maintenance, mailing lists, IRC channels, and monthly technical meetings.
For and against
For
- Free under the BSD 3-Clause license
- Supports multiple listed guest operating systems
- CPU, I/O, and network virtualization
- Nested virtualization supported
- Community support and online documentation
Against
- Host platform is Intel x86 bare-metal hardware
- Management interface is command line
- Focused on embedded IoT development
The verdict
ACRN provides a focused, free hypervisor stack for embedded systems, with broad guest OS support and virtualization functions. Its Intel x86 host requirement and CLI management define the environments where it fits.
Who it suits
ACRN suits embedded IoT developers working with Intel x86 bare-metal hosts and command-line management. It is also relevant where multiple guest operating systems, nested virtualization, and separated safety domains matter.
