Xen Project Hypervisor

What it is

Xen Project Hypervisor is a free, open-source type-1 hypervisor for running multiple operating systems on one host. It is used as a foundation for server and desktop virtualization, IaaS, embedded systems, security applications, and hardware appliances. Linux is the most common control stack, while NetBSD and FreeBSD are also named as host options. Xen's microkernel design is intended to keep its memory footprint small and limit the interface presented to guests. It can place a system’s main device driver in a VM so that VM can be restarted after a driver crash or compromise without affecting the rest of the system. On x86, fully paravirtualized guests can run on hardware without virtualization extensions. Listed capabilities include VM snapshots, nested virtualization, and GPU acceleration. The separate XAPI toolstack supports multiple hosts, VM snapshots and migration, resource pools, storage migration, monitoring, upgrades, patching, event tracking, and Open vSwitch. Its built-in guest support and templates cover Windows and Linux. Xen downloads are source releases for building, packaging, and platform integration.

For and against

For

  • Runs multiple operating systems on one host
  • Supports VM snapshots, nested virtualization, and GPU acceleration
  • Driver isolation can limit the impact of a failure
  • XAPI supports multi-host management and VM migration
  • Windows and Linux guest templates are available

Against

  • Downloads are source releases for building and integration
  • XAPI is a separate toolstack

The verdict

Xen offers virtualization capabilities for multiple host and guest environments, with XAPI providing a broad set of management functions. Its downloads are source releases, so building, packaging, and platform integration are part of the stated distribution model.

Who it suits

Xen may suit infrastructure, embedded, automotive, security-sensitive, and safety-critical systems. Its separate XAPI toolstack is relevant to users managing multiple hosts and virtual machines.
