YugabyteDB Anywhere
What it is
YugabyteDB Anywhere (YBA) is a self-managed database-as-a-service for deploying and operating YugabyteDB universes. It supports on-premises Linux hosts, public clouds including AWS, Azure, GCP and OCI, and Kubernetes. Teams can arrange deployments across regions, zones and cloud providers, with clusters designed to tolerate failures at the node, zone, region or provider level. For disaster recovery, xCluster supports asynchronous replication between two universes.
YBA operations include online horizontal and vertical scaling, upgrades, configuration changes, OS patching, backups and point-in-time recovery. Teams can use a graphical interface, REST APIs or a Terraform provider; documentation also lists a CLI and Kubernetes Operator. Security controls include encryption in transit and at rest, LDAP and OIDC authentication, role-based access, and TLS certificate options. Both internet-connected and air-gapped deployments are supported. The free evaluation license lasts up to 32 consecutive calendar days; production use requires a commercial production license, with pricing on request. A universe contains one primary cluster and can optionally have one attached read replica cluster.
For and against
For
- Supports deployments across regions, zones and cloud providers.
- Provides asynchronous replication between two universes.
- Operations include backups and point-in-time recovery.
- Supports GUI, REST APIs and Terraform.
- Air-gapped deployments are supported.
Against
- Evaluation license is limited to 32 consecutive calendar days.
- Production use requires a commercial license.
- Commercial pricing is on request.
- A universe has one primary cluster and at most one attached read replica.
The verdict
YBA combines deployment management, routine operations and recovery capabilities for YugabyteDB universes. The evaluation is time-limited, and commercial production licensing is required.
Who it suits
YBA suits teams operating YugabyteDB across on-premises infrastructure, public clouds or Kubernetes. It may also suit organizations needing air-gapped deployments or multi-region disaster recovery options.
