WinTopo
Biggleswade, England, UK
What it is
WinTopo converts TIF, JPG, PNG, GIF, and BMP files, as well as scanned images, into vector files for CAD, GIS, and CNC applications. Its One-Touch Vectorisation performs raster-to-vector conversion in one click, and documented exports include DXF, SHP, PDF, MIF, ARC, DI, WMF, EMF, ASC, and WTX. WinTopo Pro adds image processing tools, batch conversion, and more advanced vectorisation algorithms and options. Pro also supports georeferencing, can extract coordinate information from GeoTIFF images, and includes manual vector digitising and editing over the raster image. The Pro trial allows access to all features, but an unlicensed copy saves only a sample of the vector result. WinTopo Freeware is completely free and unrestricted for small conversion volumes. The first Pro license costs £200 once and activates saving, printing, and exporting on one computer; an additional license costs £150 once for one specific computer. WinTopo runs on Windows 7 or higher, according to the maker. Freeware is 32-bit and works on either 32-bit or 64-bit systems; Pro installs a version matching the computer's architecture.
For and against
For
- One-click raster-to-vector conversion
- Exports to ten documented formats
- Pro includes batch conversion and image processing
- Freeware is unrestricted for small volumes
Against
- Windows 7 or higher is required
- Unlicensed Pro trial saves only a sample
- Each Pro license applies to one computer
The verdict
WinTopo combines a free option for small conversion volumes with Pro tools for more extensive vectorisation and editing. Check the trial's save restriction and the single-computer license terms before relying on Pro output.
Who it suits
WinTopo may suit Windows users converting raster images for CAD, GIS, or CNC work, especially those needing batch conversion or georeferencing. The free version is described for small conversion volumes.
