What it is
Wings 3D is a free desktop subdivision modeler for shaping and preparing 3D models. Its tools include operations such as moving, scaling, rotating, extruding, beveling, bridging, cutting, welding, sweeping, bending, shearing, and creating insets. AutoUV can cut and unfold a model surface for export to painting and texturing workflows. The software supports vertex colors, materials, and lights, and exports common 3D formats such as .obj; 3D print export is also listed. Its configurable interface supports customizable hotkeys and context-sensitive right-click menus. Wings 3D runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with sculpting tools but no animation tools. Rendering uses an external engine. The listed stable release is 2.4.1, released in January 2025; snapshot builds add experimental features and are recommended for experienced users interested in trying them. Windows requires Windows 10 or later and OpenGL 2.1. The documentation project remains in progress and does not cover every aspect of the software.
For and against
For
- Free for personal and commercial projects
- Runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Exports common 3D formats such as .obj
- Includes AutoUV and sculpting tools
Against
- Does not support animation
- Rendering relies on an external engine
- Documentation does not cover every aspect
The verdict
Wings 3D provides a broad set of modeling and export tools across three desktop platforms. Its lack of animation and dependence on external rendering are important limits to consider.
Who it suits
It suits desktop users focused on subdivision modeling, sculpting, UV preparation, or 3D print export. It is less suited to workflows that require animation tools or rendering within the application.
