Vultr Block Storage
West Palm Beach, Florida
What it is
Vultr Block Storage provides mountable raw HDD or NVMe volumes for Vultr Cloud Compute instances. It is intended for application data such as databases, images, audio, and video. HDD targets bulk storage, while NVMe targets higher performance and can be bootable. Listed capabilities include API snapshots and resizable volumes. Provisioning is available through the Vultr Console, API, CLI, or Terraform. Sustained limits are 500 IOPS and 100 MB/s for HDD, and 10,000 IOPS and 400 MB/s for NVMe, with bursts up to 150% for up to 60 seconds. Data is encrypted at rest with AES-256. A volume and its compute instance must share a Vultr location. Each volume attaches to one instance at a time, while one instance can use up to 16 volumes. Automated server backups exclude attached volumes. Resizing requires manual filesystem expansion, and in-place shrinking is unsupported. Pricing is listed from $6/mo; the plan detail gives 0.025 USD per GB per month.
For and against
For
- Offers HDD and NVMe volume types
- Supports bootable NVMe volumes
- Provides API snapshots and resizing
- Encrypts data at rest with AES-256
- Supports up to 40 TB volumes
Against
- Volumes must share location with instances
- Each volume attaches to one instance
- Automated server backups exclude volumes
- Shrinking in place is unsupported
The verdict
Vultr Block Storage offers two storage tiers, API-based provisioning, and published performance limits. Location, backup, and filesystem-resize constraints should shape deployment plans.
Who it suits
