VHD Attach
What it is
VHD Attach is a free Windows utility for mounting and detaching virtual disk files. It adds Attach and Detach choices to the right-click menu for VHD files, and settings can add a Detach option to the hard-drive menu as well. The program can automatically attach disks when the system starts, with either full-access or read-only access, and can display virtual-disk information without mounting the disk. It supports Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and later, including Windows 10; older Windows versions such as Vista are not supported. On Windows 8 and Windows Server 8, it can also work with ISO images and VHDX disks. Command-line options include /attach, /detach, and /detachdrive. Its source repository is published under the MIT License. A VHD stored on a network location may need a service-account change to grant access. Automatic mounting of a BitLocker-enabled drive occurs before the user interface appears, so its password prompt is not shown.
For and against

- Can mount disks at system startup
- Startup mounts can be read-only or full-access
- Shows virtual-disk information without mounting
- Supports command-line attach and detach parameters
Against
- Does not support Windows Vista or older systems
