VFX Texture Lab
What it is
VFX Texture Lab is a free, MIT-licensed node-based application for creating procedural textures, animated flipbooks, reusable PBR materials and lightweight geometry for real-time visual effects. It targets 3D and VFX artists working on fire, smoke, energy, dissolves, terrain and material graphs. The typed graph provides noise, shape, blend, adjustment, distortion, blur, flood-fill, distance, terrain and surface-analysis tools, with 8-bit and 16-bit output. PBR channels can be previewed in 3D with HDR lighting, displacement, bloom, shadows and multiple meshes. Timeline, curve, temporal blending, frame-delay, reaction-diffusion and flipbook tools support animation. The app generates procedural meshes, imports and processes Wavefront OBJ, unwraps UVs, bakes maps and exports indexed UV-mapped OBJ data. PNG, TGA and raw R16 images, texture templates, channel packing and portable graph packages are supported. It runs on Windows and Linux, using WebGPU through wgpu-py; available features depend on the graphics adapter and driver. The project is in active public beta, and Windows builds are unsigned.
For and against
For
- Free under the MIT License
- Node graph supports procedural texture authoring
- Includes PBR materials and 3D preview
- Bakes maps and exports OBJ geometry
- Runs on Windows and Linux
Against
- Project is in active public beta
- Unsigned Windows builds may trigger SmartScreen
- Features depend on graphics adapter and driver
- Not intended to replace a full polygon modeller
The verdict
VFX Texture Lab brings textures, materials, animation and procedural meshes into one graph-based workflow. Its beta status, unsigned Windows builds and hardware-dependent WebGPU features warrant attention before adoption.
Who it suits
It suits 3D and VFX artists who need procedural texture, material, animation and geometry workflows. Users should be comfortable with beta software and graphics-driver requirements.
