Uyuni
What it is
Uyuni is an open-source tool for configuring infrastructure and managing software across groups of machines. It deploys patches and packages through assignable software channels and repositories, and can automate hardened operating system templates for bare metal, virtual machines, and containers. Its server acts as a Salt Master to register and manage Salt clients. Documented client systems include SUSE Linux Enterprise, openSUSE, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Oracle Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, Amazon Linux, AlmaLinux, and Raspberry Pi OS. Those clients can run on-premises or in public, private, hybrid, and multi-cloud environments. Uyuni can check public security patch status, match subscriptions, and run OpenSCAP compliance checks. Role-based access control limits user actions and resources to explicitly authorized ones. Prometheus and Grafana monitoring is supported, including health metrics and client exporters, but both services must run on a separate machine from the Uyuni Server. Uyuni does not supply certificates by default for securing its Prometheus monitoring configuration, so users must provide and deploy them. The project directs bug reports to GitHub and offers GitHub Discussions.
For and against
For
- Manages clients across multiple deployment environments
- Automates OS templates for bare metal, VMs, and containers
- Supports patch status checks and OpenSCAP compliance checks
- Role-based access limits user permissions
- Integrates with Prometheus and Grafana
Against
- Prometheus and Grafana must run separately from the server
- Users must provide certificates for Prometheus security
- Hardware requirements depend on deployment and channel requirements
The verdict
Uyuni brings patching, provisioning, Salt client management, and compliance checks together as a free, open-source project. Plan for separate monitoring infrastructure and certificate setup if using Prometheus monitoring.
Who it suits
Uyuni suits administrators managing multiple Linux machines across on-premises or cloud environments. It may also suit teams that need patch management, provisioning, access control, or compliance checks.
