TuFuse
What it is
TuFuse is a free Windows command-line program that combines selected regions from multiple images into a composite. It can use the best-focused regions, the best-exposed regions, or both. By default, it first focus-blends images with similar exposures, then exposure-blends those intermediate images. An auto-bracketing option creates lighter and darker versions of an input and fuses them with the original. TuFuse reads 8-bit JPEG and 8- or 16-bit TIFF files, and writes TIFF or BigTIFF output. It can also read RAW formats supported by DCRaw if that separate program is installed; DCRaw is not distributed with TuFuse. The program expects perfectly aligned images, and it has no graphical interface. It is designed to work with PTAssembler, which provides a graphical interface and can align images before invoking TuFuse. The listed current version is 1.60, dated August 2012, with 32-bit and 64-bit downloads; version 1.50 is listed as a previous release. TuFuse comes with no warranty, and unauthorized redistribution or bundling requires the author's written consent.
For and against
For
- Combines focus blending and exposure blending.
- Auto-bracketing creates lighter and darker image versions.
- Reads JPEG, TIFF, and supported RAW formats.
- Writes TIFF or BigTIFF output.
Against
- Has no graphical user interface.
- Input images must be perfectly aligned.
- RAW support requires separately installed DCRaw.
- Listed current version 1.60 is dated August 2012.
The verdict
TuFuse offers image fusion options for focused and exposed regions, with TIFF and BigTIFF output. Its command-line interface, alignment requirement, and separately installed DCRaw requirement for RAW files are important constraints.
Who it suits
TuFuse suits Windows users who want to combine focused or well-exposed image regions and are comfortable with a command-line program. It may also suit users working with PTAssembler for a graphical workflow and image alignment.
