Trino
What it is
Trino is a free, distributed SQL query engine for analyzing large datasets across different data sources. It supports ANSI SQL and can combine systems in one query, such as joining S3 object storage with MySQL. Its parallel design is built for low-latency analytics and data warehousing, not general-purpose relational database or OLTP workloads. Connectors cover BigQuery, Cassandra, ClickHouse, Elasticsearch, MongoDB, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Redis, Snowflake and SQL Server. The project maintains JDBC, Go, JavaScript, Python and C# drivers, a command-line interface and a Grafana data-source plugin. Deploy it on Kubernetes, in Docker or as a manually deployed server, in cloud or on-premises environments. AI functions work directly with OpenAI and Anthropic and with other models through Ollama, using an external language model service. Security options include several authentication and access-control methods, but a default installation has no security features enabled. The self-managed open-source plan is free under Apache License 2.0.
For and against
For
- Queries multiple data sources in one SQL query.
- Connectors include MySQL, BigQuery and Snowflake.
- Runs on Kubernetes, Docker or a deployed server.
- Maintains drivers for five programming languages.
Against
- Default installation has no security features enabled.
- Not designed as an OLTP replacement.
- Self-managed deployment is listed for the free plan.
The verdict
Trino brings distributed SQL querying and a broad set of connectors to analytics workloads. Review its security configuration before deployment, since security is off by default.
Who it suits
Trino suits teams that need SQL analytics across multiple data sources in cloud or on-premises environments. It is designed for data warehousing and analytics, rather than OLTP or general-purpose database use.
