TrainerBridge
What it is
TrainerBridge is a free, open-source Linux application that launches standalone Windows trainers alongside Steam games running through Proton. It scans Steam libraries, identifies each game’s Proton version and compatdata prefix, and starts a trainer in the matching environment. Users can import and manage one trainer executable per Steam game, then launch the game and trainer together or separately. Steam installations from native packages, Snap, and Flatpak are supported. An optional Protontricks frontend installs common runtimes, fonts, settings, and applications into a game prefix. Before prefix changes, TrainerBridge can create backups using copy-on-write folders on compatible Btrfs filesystems or compressed .tar.zst archives elsewhere. Downloads include an x86_64 AppImage, a portable .tar.xz archive, and SHA-256 checksum files. The application does not supply trainers, modify game files, or bypass anti-cheat systems. Prefix component compatibility depends on the game, prefix state, Proton version, and Winetricks recipe.
For and against
For
- Free and open source
- Detects Proton versions and prefixes
- Supports native, Snap, and Flatpak Steam
- Optional Protontricks frontend
- Prefix backup support
Against
- Linux only
- Manages one trainer executable per game
- Compatibility varies by game and Proton setup
- Maker advises against online multiplayer use
The verdict
TrainerBridge organizes standalone Windows trainers around Proton-based Steam games and can back up prefixes before changes. Compatibility remains dependent on each game, prefix, Proton version, and recipe.
Who it suits
It suits Linux Steam players using Proton who already have standalone trainer executables and want them associated with specific games. It is not intended to bypass anti-cheat systems.
