TrainAR
What it is
TrainAR is a tool for creating procedural augmented reality training on handheld devices, combining an interaction concept, didactic framework, and authoring environment. Authors import 3D models, convert them into TrainAR objects, and use visual scripting to define instructions, user actions, and feedback. The authoring tool includes onboarding animations, tracking solutions, assembly placement, layered feedback, and assessments. Learners can grab, interact with, and combine objects or respond to interface actions such as questions. Developers can instead work through the standard Unity Editor overlay and C# programming. The Unity extension works with Unity on Windows, macOS, and Linux, while finished training can be deployed to Android and iOS. iOS deployment requires Xcode on macOS after the app is built. The installation guide calls for Unity 2022.3 LTS and relevant platform modules. A model needs a Transform, MeshFilter, and MeshRenderer to become a TrainAR object; SkinnedMeshRenderers are unsupported. TrainAR is free for commercial and non-commercial use under the MIT license. It supports procedural task understanding, not associated motor-skill training.
For and against
For
- Visual scripting defines instructions, actions, and feedback.
- Includes training assessments and layered feedback.
- Free for commercial and non-commercial use under MIT license.
- Deploys training to Android and iOS.
Against
- SkinnedMeshRenderers are not supported.
- iOS deployment requires Xcode on macOS.
- Does not train associated motor skills.
The verdict
TrainAR provides visual authoring for procedural AR training and also supports Unity and C# workflows. Check model requirements and the iOS deployment requirement before beginning a project.
Who it suits
TrainAR is aimed at non-programmers, designers, and domain experts with media competency, as well as developers with Unity and programming expertise. It suits procedural task training before or after practical training.
