TiKV

What it is

TiKV is an open-source distributed transactional key-value database that provides a shared storage layer across nodes. It offers separate RawKV and transactional key-value APIs, with ACID semantics on the transactional side; both APIs cannot use the same keyspace. The project describes deployments reaching petabyte scale and trillions of rows. Raft groups replicate data for fault tolerance, while horizontal scaling and rebalancing support cluster growth. RawKV includes time-to-live expiration and compare-and-swap operations. Client libraries are listed for Java, Go, Rust, Python, and C++; Java and Go are marked stable, while the others are unstable. Documentation describes TLS connections and configurable encryption at rest, including AES methods. TiKV is self-hosted under the Apache 2.0 license and supports Linux, macOS, Windows, gRPC, RawKV API, and TxnKV API. It was originally created by PingCAP and is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation graduate project.

For and against

For

  • Apache 2.0 open-source license
  • Raft replication for fault tolerance
  • Horizontal scaling and rebalancing
  • TTL and compare-and-swap in RawKV
  • TLS and configurable encryption at rest

Against

  • Raw and transactional APIs cannot share a keyspace
  • Rust, Python, and C++ clients are marked unstable
  • Self-hosted deployment requires operating the cluster

The verdict

TiKV provides distributed storage with both raw and ACID transactional APIs, plus replication and scaling mechanisms. The keyspace separation rule and uneven client stability should shape implementation plans.

Who it suits

TiKV suits developers and operators building self-hosted distributed storage systems that need replication, clustering, and transactional or raw key-value access.
