The Devourer
What it is
The Devourer is a free, open-source portable Windows utility for best-effort shredding of individual files. It overwrites a primary file stream and detected NTFS alternate data streams in four passes: zeroes, ones, cryptographically secure random data, then zeroes. Normal, Aggressive, and Extreme modes are available. Aggressive adds a Windows ReTrim request, while Extreme also fills free space on the same volume with temporary random data. Before overwriting, the utility checks media type, TRIM, BitLocker, and Volume Shadow Copies and displays warnings when needed. It rejects directories, symbolic links, reparse points, multiply hard-linked files, and files locked by another process. The app processes files locally without telemetry, analytics, accounts, remote storage, automatic uploads, or runtime network API. The portable release runs on Windows 10 or Windows 11 x64 and handles one regular file at a time without an installer. Administrator access is required only for Aggressive and Extreme modes. The guide says the executable is not code-signed and recommends checking its SHA-256 checksum. The project uses the MIT License. Physical erasure cannot be guaranteed across wear leveling, snapshots, backups, cloud replicas, or other copies.
For and against
For
- Four-pass overwrite sequence
- Checks TRIM, BitLocker, and shadow copies
- No telemetry or runtime network API
- Portable Windows 10/11 x64 app
- MIT-licensed open-source project
Against
- Handles one regular file at a time
- Does not shred folders or drives
- Release executable is not code-signed
- Physical erasure cannot be guaranteed
The verdict
The Devourer offers local, multi-pass file shredding with warnings for storage conditions and several safety checks. Its scope is limited to individual files, and storage technology or external copies can prevent guaranteed physical erasure.
Who it suits
It suits Windows users who need local, best-effort shredding of individual files. Normal mode is described for most users, while Extreme is for special cases involving heavier drive writing.
