TeXworks
What it is
TeXworks is a free desktop application for authoring TeX, LaTeX, and ConTeXt documents on Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux. Its Unicode-based, TeX-aware editor is designed for casual and non-technical users and includes syntax highlighting, auto-completion, spell-checking, templates, search and replace, and multiple file encodings. An integrated PDF viewer synchronizes source and preview through SyncTeX; the 0.6.x series adds continuous scrolling, two-page view, text selection and copying, and a ruler. The normal typesetting workflow uses pdfTeX or XeTeX to create PDFs, with DVI output configurable. You can run commands such as pdftex, pdflatex, xelatex, and context, along with BibTeX and Makeindex. Scripting supports QtScript, Lua, and Python. TeXworks requires a TeX distribution such as TeX Live or MiKTeX to typeset documents. The latest listed release is 0.6.11, released February 10, 2026. The project provides installers and packages for the supported systems and uses the GNU General Public License.
