Tablix
What it is
Tablix is an open-source, self-hosted .NET server and React dashboard for natural-language database questions. It connects to SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQL Server, returning executed SQL, rows, row counts, and evidence with each answer. The system scans tables, keys, indexes, and relationships, then creates editable database and table context. Workflows are available in the dashboard, through an MCP endpoint for agents, and through REST for applications and automation. Configurable model providers include Ollama, OpenAI, OpenAI-compatible endpoints, and Gemini; database chat and MCP require tool-calling support. Statement types can be permitted per connection, calls are scoped to the selected database, and multi-statement SQL is rejected. The dashboard includes setup, schema browsing, context editing, query execution, chat, and CSV or JSON export. Docker Compose starts the server, dashboard, MCP endpoint, product state, and a sample SQLite database. Tablix says it has no cloud dependency or telemetry; outbound calls go to the configured provider, or none with local Ollama. The project is described as early software. For version 0.3.0, database passwords and provider keys are stored in cleartext in tablix.db.
For and against
For
- Answers include SQL, rows, counts, and evidence
- Supports four listed database systems
- Dashboard, MCP, and REST access
- No cloud dependency or telemetry stated
- CSV and JSON exports
Against
- Described as early software
- Database chat and MCP need tool-calling support
- Version 0.3.0 stores secrets in cleartext
- Requires self-hosted deployment
The verdict
Tablix connects natural-language questions with executed database queries and inspectable evidence across several access methods. Its self-hosted design and MIT license suit internal use, while the documented cleartext secret storage requires protection of tablix.db.
Who it suits
Tablix suits data, platform, AI, DevOps, SRE, and coding-agent teams needing self-hosted natural-language database access.
