Surge XT
What it is
Surge XT is a free, open-source virtual instrument plugin and hybrid synthesizer for making music. Its subtractive hybrid engine gives each patch two scenes that can be layered or split. Each scene has three oscillators and 12 algorithms, including wavetable, FM, string, and audio input. The product lists more than 2,800 patches and more than 700 wavetables, plus 12 LFO units, flexible modulation routing, and 16 effect units with 27 algorithms. Performance features include MPE, Scala and MTS-ESP microtuning, and Open Sound Control. Surge XT runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with stable plugin formats that differ by system. It primarily runs as a plugin in a DAW or another compatible host, though a standalone executable is also available. The downloads page identifies version 1.3.4 as the stable release recommended for normal production use. Surge XT is licensed under GPL3, and its FAQ says users may distribute or commercially license music and other output made with it.
