StemForge
What it is
StemForge is a free, open-source audio workstation that runs locally in a browser on Linux, macOS, Windows, or self-hosted setups. Its connected tabs handle stem separation, MIDI extraction, audio generation, song composition, mixing, and export. Demucs and BS-Roformer can separate vocals, drums, bass, other, guitar, and piano, with spectral analysis recommending an engine and model. BasicPitch extracts MIDI from instrument stems, while faster-whisper and pitch tracking handle vocal melodies; Web MIDI can send results to hardware synthesizers. Stable Audio Open generates text-conditioned audio up to 600 seconds, with optional audio or MIDI conditioning. AceStep supports song generation, and RVC provides voice conversion with 14 built-in voices. Mix combines project outputs, and exports include WAV, FLAC, MP3, and OGG, individually or as a ZIP. Audio stays on the computer after model downloads.
For and against
For
- Open-source and free to use
- Runs locally in a browser
- Supports stem and MIDI workflows
- Exports WAV, FLAC, MP3, and OGG
- Audio remains on the user's computer
Against
- Requires Python 3.12, FFmpeg, and FluidSynth
- NVIDIA acceleration needs driver 580 or newer
- CPU-only operation is significantly slower
- AceStep models require about 20 GB
The verdict
StemForge links several audio-production workflows in one local workstation, with broad export support and hardware MIDI output. Setup and model requirements are substantial, especially for composition and GPU-assisted use.
Who it suits
StemForge suits creators wanting local browser-based separation, MIDI, generation, composition, and mixing. It is also relevant to users with compatible hardware who can install the documented dependencies.
