Stash
What it is
Stash is a cloud-native backup and recovery solution for Kubernetes workloads. It runs as a Kubernetes operator using restic or Kubernetes CSI Driver VolumeSnapshotter functionality, with backup targets and backup or restore behavior defined through Kubernetes Custom Resource Definitions. It can back up volumes in Deployments, DaemonSets, StatefulSets, ReplicaSets, ReplicationControllers, and OpenShift DeploymentConfigs, as well as stand-alone PVCs with ReadWriteMany access. Supported databases include MariaDB, Redis, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Percona XtraDB, and Etcd. Stash also protects virtual machines running on Kubernetes with scheduled backups, snapshot verification, and on-demand restores. Storage backends include AWS S3, Minio, Rook, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage, OpenStack Swift, DigitalOcean Spaces, Backblaze B2, REST Server, and Kubernetes persistent volumes. Content Defined Chunking uploads differences since the last backup, and backed-up data is encrypted with AES-256. Prometheus monitoring and Grafana dashboards provide operational metrics. The free Community Edition has no on-prem storage backend, database backup, or automatic, batch, or point-in-time recovery features. Enterprise is listed as PAYG or annual subscription, with price not listed.
For and against
For
- Supports multiple Kubernetes workload types and databases
- Protects Kubernetes-hosted virtual machines
- Encrypts backed-up data with AES-256
- Includes Prometheus monitoring and Grafana dashboards
Against
- Community Edition has no on-prem storage backend
- Community Edition has no database backup
- Community Edition lacks auto-backup, batch backup, and PITR
The verdict
Stash covers Kubernetes volume, database, and virtual machine protection, with multiple storage integrations and operational metrics. The free Community Edition omits database backup and several automation and recovery capabilities listed for Enterprise.
Who it suits
