StartupDB
What it is
StartupDB is a free database of startups, investors, and people, focused on funding rounds and the relationships around them. Company records may show round dates, amounts, investor roles, and source URLs, while links attached to facts let users check their origins. StartupDB draws on reviewed public investor portfolio pages, news, company and investor sites, as well as edits from staff, founders, and investors. Its read-only MCP server and REST API are available without an account or API key. The MCP server has six tools for searching startups, investors, and people and retrieving records. REST endpoints return JSON for searches, records, investor portfolios, and company funding activity. Both interfaces allow 120 requests per minute per IP, with no daily cap. Search and profile features include company, funding, and founder information. Founders and investors can claim and correct pages, with reported issues reviewed by staff. Coverage is not complete, so absent records should not be taken as proof that a round or investor does not exist. The dataset facts and compilation carry a CC BY 4.0 license for commercial reuse with attribution; third-party logos, photos, and site text are excluded.
For and against
For
- Free MCP server and REST API need no account or key
- Records link facts to sources
- Searches startups, investors, and people
- Commercial reuse allowed with CC BY 4.0 attribution
Against
- Database coverage is not complete
- API and MCP access cap at 120 requests per minute per IP
The verdict
StartupDB combines startup and investor records with source links and free API access. Its coverage is explicitly incomplete, so an absent record does not establish that an event did not occur.
Who it suits
StartupDB suits people looking up startup funding, investor portfolios, or founder information, including developers who want read-only API access. Founders and investors can also use it to correct their pages.
