SQL LRS
Savage, Maryland, USA
What it is
SQL LRS is a self-hosted Learning Record Store for xAPI statements, attachments, and documents. It supports SQLite, Postgres, MariaDB, and MySQL. Built-in conditional logic can assess incoming activity and create internal xAPI statements for validated outcomes. Its SQL data can feed analytics tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Looker, and Apache Superset, as well as AI stacks that use structured databases. Authentication options include OpenID and API credentials with keys, secrets, and scopes. SQL LRS is available through GitHub, DockerHub, and Platform One’s Iron Bank, but customers host their own deployments. The maker says its Iron Bank containers have Certification to Field for deployment in Platform One IL2 and IL4 environments, and that the software conforms to IEEE 9274.1.1. It is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license and may be used in commercial projects. SQL LRS is free; implementation and support services are quoted separately. It stores learning records rather than acting as an LMS or content store, and does not itself produce learning data or host learning content.
For and against
For
- Supports four listed SQL database options
- Conditional logic can generate validated outcome statements
- Apache 2.0 license permits commercial use
- Available through GitHub, DockerHub, and Iron Bank
Against
- Customers host deployments themselves
- Does not create learning data
- Does not host learning content
- Implementation and support services are quoted separately
The verdict
SQL LRS provides a free, self-hosted store for xAPI records, with database and analytics connections. It is not a learning management system or a place to host learning content.
Who it suits
SQL LRS suits teams that need to collect xAPI activity from LMS, AR/VR/XR, or simulation systems and exchange structured learning data with business or AI systems. It requires customers to host their own deployment.
