Solo 2
Newark, Delaware, United States
What it is
Solo 2 is an open-source FIDO2 security key for adding hardware-based authentication to online accounts. It supports FIDO2, WebAuthn, and U2F, and basic use needs no software installation or drivers. A capacitive sensor confirms authentication when touched. The key works with security-key-enabled services such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Salesforce, GitHub, Dropbox, and Twitter/X; listed browsers include Chrome, Edge, Safari, Brave, and Firefox. Credentials and passkeys remain on the physical key rather than being backed up to cloud services, with capacity for approximately 100 passkeys. Standard Solo 2 keys ship with locked firmware and SoloKeys attestation certificates, while the Hacker model does not include attestation. The solo2-cli utility manages passkeys, firmware updates, PINs, PIV, and OpenPGP settings. Forgetting the PIN and resetting the key erases stored passkeys, and the guide recommends registering a backup key. Prices start at $34 as a one-time purchase for a USB-C model without NFC; NFC versions are listed separately.
