Sniffnet
What it is
Sniffnet is a free network monitoring app for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It displays overall Internet traffic statistics and real-time charts of traffic intensity, and lets users select a network adapter, filter observed traffic, and import or export PCAP capture reports. The app can identify local network connections, show remote hosts’ geographical locations, and find host domain names and ASNs. It recognizes more than 6,000 upper-layer services, protocols, trojans, and worms. Users can see which programs use bandwidth and save favorites, configure notifications for network events, and import custom IP blacklists to highlight potentially dangerous connections. Sniffnet supports live capture, display filters, protocol dissectors, and offline trace analysis; it can read PCAPNG and CAP files as well as PCAP. Custom themes and 26 languages are available. A 2025 security audit had one relevant low-severity finding, which was fixed. Most functionality uses offline databases, though reverse DNS lookups provide hostnames for IPs.
For and against
For
- Free and open-source under MIT or Apache-2.0.

- Reads PCAPNG and CAP files as well as PCAP.
- Available in 26 languages.
Against
- Traffic decryption is not supported.
- Reverse DNS lookups are made to provide hostnames.
The verdict
Sniffnet combines traffic monitoring, capture handling, host details, and event notifications in a free desktop app. It does not support traffic decryption, and reverse DNS lookups are used for hostnames.
Who it suits
Sniffnet suits people who want to monitor network traffic on Windows, macOS, or Linux, including users who find other network analyzers difficult to understand. It also offers capture and offline trace tools for users who need them.
