ShredOS
What it is
ShredOS is a small, free, open-source operating system that boots from external media and erases disks with nwipe. The project provides .img and .iso images for USB drives, CD/DVD, Ventoy, and virtual machines. It supports x86 PCs and servers, plus Intel-based Macs, with BIOS or UEFI booting. Nwipe offers multiple erasure methods and pseudo-random generators, configurable rounds, verification, and a final blanking pass. ShredOS can produce PDF erasure certificates and log files, including reports focused on an individual drive or the whole system. The image includes disk utilities such as smartmontools, hdparm, nvme-cli, sg3_utils, hexedit, and parallel. For automated workflows, the project documents unattended autonuke, PXE booting, persistent configuration, and custom scripts. Headless operation and an optional Telnet server are documented for systems with faulty or missing display hardware. Logs and PDFs can be transferred to FTP or TFTP servers; FTP does not encrypt data. Wiping irreversibly erases data, and writing the image to a USB drive overwrites its existing contents.
For and against
For
- Supports BIOS and UEFI booting
- Offers multiple erasure methods and verification
- Generates PDF certificates and log files
- Documents PXE booting and unattended workflows
Against
- Wiping irreversibly erases data
- Writing the image overwrites the USB drive
- FTP transfers do not encrypt data
The verdict
ShredOS provides bootable disk erasure with configurable nwipe methods, verification, and reports. Check the selected drive carefully before starting, and remember that writing the image erases the USB drive’s contents.
Who it suits
ShredOS suits people who need to erase disks from a bootable environment, including those managing x86 computers, servers, or Intel-based Macs. Its documented automation and reporting options may also suit repeat or unattended erasure workflows.
