Shed

What it is

Shed, also called Muxshed, is a self-hosted live production studio for mixing and distributing video. It accepts RTMP, SRT, or WebRTC inputs, provides a browser switcher, and can send one program to YouTube, Twitch, Kick, Facebook, and custom RTMP or RTMPS endpoints simultaneously. The switcher supports scenes, layered compositing, cuts, and frame-accurate stinger transitions. Browser guests can join through a WebRTC invite link without an app or account. Image overlays, lower thirds, scheduled premieres, playlists, and 24/7 channel loops are supported. Each instance can offer an unlisted HLS watch page with custom branding and an optional viewer password. Shed is open source under AGPL-3.0 and runs with ffmpeg as a Rust binary on Docker, Podman, Unraid, Proxmox, or Linux. Self-hosting costs nothing, with unlimited destinations and no per-channel fees.

For and against

For

  • Source builds require Rust 1.88+ and Node.js 20+
  • Managed hosting is not yet available
  • Support package pricing is custom

The verdict

Shed provides a broad browser-based production and distribution workflow for self-hosted deployments. Its free model and destination flexibility are useful, but setup requirements and the absence of managed hosting matter.

Who it suits

Shed suits broadcasters and production teams comfortable deploying self-hosted software on Linux or container platforms. It also fits streams needing browser guests, custom destinations, or branded watch pages.
