sfizz
What it is
sfizz is a sample-based musical synthesizer built around the SFZ instrument format. It can play existing SFZ instrument libraries or support the creation of personal instruments. The synthesizer supports SFZv1 and partial SFZv2 compatibility. It is available as VST3i, Audio Unit and LV2 plugins, as well as a standalone JACK client. Instrument makers can use hot reload to change a custom instrument and test the edits without interacting manually with the software. Its streaming system loads sounds as needed and reclaims memory when sounds are no longer in use. Downloads include Linux packages, 32-bit and 64-bit Windows installers, and a universal macOS package for Intel and Apple Silicon. Developers can integrate the engine into other programs through C and C++ API bindings; it accepts an SFZ file and MIDI-type events and renders audio through callback calls. The project requires no financial return for use, with optional donations. The repository was archived on June 21, 2026 and is read-only.
For and against
For
- Works with existing SFZ instrument libraries.
- Available as VST3i, Audio Unit and LV2 plugins.
- Hot reload supports instrument editing.
- Streaming loads sounds on demand and reclaims unused memory.
- Free to use; donations are optional.
Against
- SFZv2 compatibility is partial.
- Linux file selection may do nothing without zenity.
- The repository is archived and read-only.
The verdict
sfizz combines SFZ playback and instrument creation with plugin, standalone and developer-library options. Its partial SFZv2 compatibility and archived repository are important limitations to weigh.
Who it suits
sfizz suits musicians working with SFZ libraries and instrument makers who want hot reload for edits. Developers can also use its C and C++ bindings to integrate the engine into their programs.
