SecureWipe
What it is
SecureWipe is a free, open-source tool for erasing disks on Linux and Windows 10/11. It detects HDD, SSD, and NVMe media and identifies drives by model and serial number. For LUKS, BitLocker, or SED-encrypted drives, it offers Crypto Erase first. Other methods include ANSSI Level 1 and 2, NIST Clear and Purge, and custom two-to-seven-pass wipes for HDDs. Because overwrite passes are ineffective with SSD and NVMe wear-leveling, the tool blocks them and offers firmware-level or crypto erase options. It also blocks wiping the system disk and disables NIST Purge for USB and other removable drives. After erasure, SecureWipe verifies a random sample, set to 10% by default. It creates a timestamped PDF certificate with drive details, the method and result, a watermark, and a SHA-256 QR code, alongside a raw text log. The interface is available in GUI and terminal modes, with French and English support. It requires Python 3.10 or later; the GUI also requires customtkinter. The project is GPL v3 licensed and provided without warranty.
For and against
For
- Free and open source under GPL v3
- Supports HDD, SSD, and NVMe
- Provides GUI and terminal modes
- Creates a PDF certificate and raw text log
- Supports multiple drives in one session
Against
- Requires Python 3.10 or later
- GUI requires customtkinter
- Provided without warranty
The verdict
SecureWipe combines several disk-erasure methods with safeguards and certificate-based verification. SSD and NVMe overwrite passes are blocked, and using the GUI requires an additional dependency.
Who it suits
SecureWipe may suit people who need to erase drives and retain records for audits or compliance files. The maker describes its intended use in professional healthcare environments subject to HDS, NIS2, and GDPR requirements.
