Scrutiny
What it is
Scrutiny is free, self-hosted software for monitoring hard drive health through S.M.A.R.T. metrics. Its dashboard tracks metric history and temperature, and lets users set thresholds based on real-world failure rates. The collector uses smartctl to find connected drives, and Scrutiny integrates with smartd. It can send failure notifications through email, webhooks, Discord, Gotify, Mattermost, ntfy, Slack, Teams, Telegram, and other listed services. Deployment choices include an all-in-one Docker image, separate hub-and-spoke Docker components, and manual installation. The hub-and-spoke setup stores S.M.A.R.T. data in InfluxDB 2.8. The repository lists Linux, macOS, and Windows binaries; Windows Docker support is still work in progress. Docker configuration requires passing drive devices through and granting SYS_RAWIO, while NVMe drives may also require SYS_ADMIN. Some RAID controllers do not expose underlying SMART data to smartctl. The project describes itself as a work in progress with some rough edges and lists the MIT license.
For and against
For
- Free and MIT licensed.
- Tracks S.M.A.R.T. history and temperature.
- Offers multiple deployment options.
- Supports many failure notification services.
- Linux, macOS, and Windows binaries are listed.
Against
- Windows Docker support is work in progress.
- Docker setup requires drive access and SYS_RAWIO.
- NVMe drives may also require SYS_ADMIN.
- Some RAID controllers do not pass SMART data through.
The verdict
Scrutiny provides drive monitoring, alerting, and several installation paths without a listed charge. Its setup requirements, RAID compatibility caveat, and stated work-in-progress status are important to weigh first.
Who it suits
Scrutiny suits people who want a self-hosted dashboard for drive health and S.M.A.R.T. alerts. It may fit users comfortable configuring drive access and running Docker or a manual installation.
