Sceptre

What it is

Sceptre is a free tool for managing AWS CloudFormation stacks from the command line or as a Python module. It can create, update, and delete stacks, retrieve stack information, and operate on related stacks grouped together. Templates may use JSON, YAML, Jinja2, or Python DSLs such as Troposphere, with YAML configuration files. Sceptre can load templates from local files, S3, or web URLs, and custom handlers can add other sources. Outputs from one stack can become parameters for another, allowing dependency order to be inferred. The tool supports multiple AWS accounts and regions, concurrency limits for launch, create, and update actions, and hooks before or after stack operations. Python-based resolvers and hooks extend its behavior. Sceptre uses the executing user’s AWS permissions by default, with AWS profiles and IAM roles configurable. Installation is available through pip or Docker, and it is designed for CI/CD pipelines.

For and against

For

  • Manages CloudFormation stack lifecycle operations
  • Supports JSON, YAML, Jinja2, and Python templates
  • Infers dependencies from stack outputs
  • Works across AWS accounts and regions
  • Available as CLI or Python module

Against

  • Requires AWS permissions for requested operations
  • Some features need additional AWS permissions
  • Pip installation assumes Python is installed

The verdict

Sceptre provides configurable orchestration around CloudFormation deployments. Its dependency handling, hooks, and multi-account support fit structured infrastructure pipelines, provided AWS permissions are configured correctly.

Who it suits

Sceptre suits teams deploying AWS CloudFormation through CI/CD, especially across dependent stacks, accounts, or regions. It also fits Python-based automation workflows.
