SATARK
What it is
SATARK is a free, open-source security analytics framework for building explainable detection pipelines across security domains. Its architecture moves from collection to normalization, detection, scoring, and explanation, using a domain-agnostic core with separate plugins. Listed domains include insider threats, malware, phishing, web, email, cloud, and identity. The insider plugin implements behavioral-spike detection for unusual USB and file-activity volumes per actor and can map findings to MITRE ATT&CK techniques such as T1091 and T1020 when available. Other listed plugins are heuristic stubs. Risk scores are intended to show contributing factors, evidence, confidence, reasoning, and knowledge references. AI may assist with summaries, but detections are meant to remain reproducible without an LLM. SATARK was created by Kaushal Bhavsar and traces its introduction to 2011 as Project Satark. The MIT-licensed project is an early open-source alpha rebuild, with evolving APIs, packaging, and plugin coverage. Installation requires Python 3.13 or later and uses uv.
For and against
For
- Open-source and free under the MIT license
- Explainable scores include evidence and reasoning
- Insider plugin detects USB and file spikes
- Supports multiple security-domain plugins
- Detections can remain reproducible without an LLM
Against
- Project is an early alpha rebuild
- Most listed plugins are heuristic stubs
- APIs, packaging, and coverage are evolving
- Requires Python 3.13 or later
The verdict
SATARK provides a plugin-based route to explainable security analytics, with its insider-threat plugin the most developed area listed. Its alpha status and uneven plugin maturity make independent evaluation important before production use.
Who it suits
SATARK is aimed at security researchers prototyping detections, engineers building reusable analytics plugins, and teams needing transparent risk scores. It is suited to users able to evaluate an evolving alpha project independently.
