SageMath
What it is
SageMath is free, open-source mathematics software for calculations across algebra, calculus, number theory, cryptography, numerical computation, commutative algebra, group theory, combinatorics and graph theory. It is presented for mathematicians, researchers and students, with stated suitability for education and research. Users can work through a browser notebook, command line, Python library or LaTeX documents. SageMath combines packages including NumPy, SciPy, matplotlib, SymPy, Maxima, GAP, FLINT and R through a common Python-based language, interfaces and wrappers. It runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, web and self-hosted setups. Windows users are directed to Windows Subsystem for Linux, while Linux binaries have been discontinued and alternatives are described in the installation guide. macOS users are directed to recommended GitHub release binaries, and Docker images are available. The GPLv2+ license permits worldwide private, commercial and governmental use. The free plan costs nothing, allows installation on unlimited computers, and permits downloading and redistribution. SageMath’s documentation, discussion groups, ask.sagemath.org and Zulip provide support.
For and against
