Rewind
What it is
Rewind is free, open-source gameplay replay software for macOS and Windows. It automatically buffers the previous 15–60 seconds of gameplay and saves that recent footage with a hotkey or when a game reports an event. Buffering can be paused at the desktop. Users can select a display or application, choose audio and microphone sources, configure storage cleanup, and rebind hotkeys. GPU encoding uses Apple VideoToolbox on macOS; Windows options include NVENC, AMF, Quick Sync, and x264. The clip library groups recordings by game and match and provides in-app playback with event-type badges. Steam achievement detection can save labeled clips by reading local Steam stats-cache files without an API key or network connection. The README also describes League of Legends match tracking through its local Live Client Data API, with feature status varying across sections. Integrations use sanctioned data sources or screen capture rather than memory reading, injection, or hooking. Rewind is GPLv3 licensed and labeled alpha.
For and against
For
- Buffers 15–60 seconds automatically
- Hotkey and event-triggered clip saving

- Clip library organized by game and match
- Steam detection needs no key or network
Against
- Project is labeled alpha
- Windows capture lacks real-hardware validation
- First macOS launch requires right-clicking Open
- League feature status varies across sections
The verdict
Rewind offers configurable instant replay capture with local Steam achievement detection and multiple encoder choices. Its alpha status and unvalidated Windows capture are important limitations to consider.
