Radiance
What it is
Radiance is free, open-source video art software for live performance, including VJ work. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Performers can work with more than 150 GPU-accelerated effects written in WGSL and edit them live. Through MPV, the software opens video clips, images, files, webcams, live streams, and YouTube videos. It detects beats in incoming audio and applies them as a shared timebase for effects. Radiance can send visuals to one or more screens and includes a projection mapping editor. The project is released under the MIT/X11 License. Building it from source requires Rust, Cargo, and dynamically linked libmpv; loading YouTube videos by URL also requires a separate yt-dlp installation. The current rewrite does not include MIDI controller input or TCP output for LED displays, both of which were present in version 0.6.1.
For and against
For
- More than 150 GPU-accelerated effects
- Effects can be edited live
- Beat detection provides a shared effects timebase
- Outputs to one or more screens
- Includes a projection mapping editor
Against
- YouTube URLs require separate yt-dlp installation
- Source builds require Rust, Cargo, and libmpv
- MIDI controller input is missing from the rewrite
- TCP output for LED displays is missing
The verdict
Radiance combines live-editable effects, beat detection, and projection mapping for video art performance. Performers who rely on MIDI controller input or TCP LED output should note those omissions in the rewrite.
Who it suits
Radiance suits VJs and other performers creating live video art, especially those who want editable effects, audio beat detection, or multi-screen output.
