R-Linux

What it is

R-Linux is a free file recovery utility for Ext2, Ext3, and Ext4 file systems used in Linux and several Unix systems. It can recover files after virus attacks or power failures, from reformatted or deleted partitions, and from disks with bad sectors. Listed recovery sources include hard disks, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, Compact Flash cards, USB drives, ZIP drives, Memory Sticks, and other removable media. File preview is available, and memory card recovery is supported. IntelligentScan can search for known file types on devices whose file systems are unknown. The program can create compressed, split, or password-protected disk and partition images, and scan objects while making those images. For bad-sector disks, it can copy a disk or part of one to an image for processing. Recovered files can be saved to disks accessible to the host operating system, including network disks. Help documentation lists support for Linux mdadm volumes and Linux LVM/LVM2. R-Linux runs on Linux and Windows, but the Linux version requires a kernel 2.6 or newer distribution that can install RPM or DEB packages, X.Org X server 1.7.6 or newer, and root privileges. It cannot recover data over a network, reconstruct RAIDs, or provide object copy.

For and against

For

  • Free file recovery utility
  • Supports Linux and Windows host versions
  • Can preview files before recovery
  • Creates compressed, split, and password-protected images
  • Supports Linux mdadm and LVM/LVM2 volumes

Against

  • Cannot reconstruct RAIDs
  • Cannot recover data over a network
  • Linux version requires root privileges

The verdict

R-Linux covers many disk and removable media recovery cases and includes image creation for bad-sector workflows. Its lack of RAID reconstruction and network recovery makes those capabilities key limits to consider.

Who it suits

R-Linux may suit people recovering files from supported Linux file systems on disks or removable media, using a Linux or Windows host. It is not suited to recovery jobs requiring RAID reconstruction or recovery over a network.
