Presto
What it is
Presto is a free, open-source distributed SQL query engine for working with large datasets across different data sources. Its ANSI SQL interface queries data where it is stored and can combine sources in one query, for interactive or batch workloads. The project describes ad hoc analysis, reporting and dashboards, and open lakehouse workloads as use cases.
Documented connectors include BigQuery, Cassandra, Delta Lake, Elasticsearch, Hive, Iceberg, Kafka, MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL and Redis. Deployment options include a server tarball, Homebrew, Docker and Helm, and the project describes running Presto on premises or in a cloud. Security options include Kerberos, LDAP, password-file authentication, access control, secure internal communication and OAuth 2.0. Users can work with the CLI or Console, connect through DBeaver or Tableau, or use Java, Python, Go and JavaScript clients; a REST API is also listed. The Presto Foundation oversees the project. Documentation identifies release 0.299, while its getting-started page still refers to version 0 from June 2022.
For and against
For
- Queries data in place across multiple sources.
- Supports interactive and batch workloads.
- Documented connectors cover many data systems.
- Offers several deployment methods and security options.
- Clients and a REST API are listed.
Against
- Documentation gives conflicting current release details.
- Running Presto requires installation or deployment.
- No hosted service plan is listed.
The verdict
Presto provides a broad SQL interface for querying data across multiple systems, with varied connectors and deployment choices. Review the documentation carefully, particularly its inconsistent release references.
Who it suits
Presto may suit teams that need SQL queries across distributed or siloed data sources, including reporting, dashboards and open lakehouse workloads. It is also an option for organizations seeking an open-source, self-hosted query engine.
