Porteus Kiosk
Biskupice, Poland
What it is
Porteus Kiosk is a Linux operating system that limits a computer to browser use and opens a selected homepage when it starts. It is designed for public web terminals in schools, libraries, cafes, hotels, offices, tourist centers, and for digital signage. The system is distributed as a hybrid ISO image that can be installed on USB sticks, hard drives, SSD or eMMC devices, and SD or MMC cards. It runs on x86_64 PCs, requires at least 2 GB of RAM and 1 GB of storage, and does not support ARM devices such as Raspberry Pi. Browser history is not retained, passwords are not saved, and caches clear when the browser closes. Read-only system components are checked at startup, and mismatches stop booting. Automatic updates provide patches, component updates, and new features. Remote administration supports clients behind NAT, proxies, or firewalls, while ThinClient and Cloud variants add connectivity and education-focused services.
