PlatformIO Core
What it is
PlatformIO Core is the command-line tool at the center of the PlatformIO ecosystem. It combines a multi-platform build system, package management, library tools and a serial port monitor for embedded development. Projects use platformio.ini to declare platforms and architectures; Library Manager can draw from the PlatformIO Registry and Git, Mercurial or Subversion repositories. The tool covers frameworks and SDKs including Arduino, CMSIS, FreeRTOS, Mbed, STM32Cube and Zephyr, and architectures such as AVR, ESP32, RISC-V and STM32. It also includes a debugger and supports a range of debug interfaces, including JTAG, ST-LINK and QEMU. The pio ci command is intended for build servers, with documented integrations including GitHub Actions and GitLab. Written in Python, Core is open source under Apache 2.0 and free for personal and commercial projects. It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD and Linux ARMv6+. Installation options include an installer script, Python Package Manager and Homebrew on macOS. Minimal diagnostics and usage sharing is enabled by default.
