pip-tools
What it is
pip-tools is a free pair of command-line tools for managing pinned pip-based packages and making builds more predictable: pip-compile and pip-sync. pip-compile creates requirements.txt files from pyproject.toml, setup.cfg, setup.py or requirements.in. It also supports project and optional dependencies declared in pyproject.toml, and can generate hashes for pip hash-checking mode. pip-sync installs, upgrades or uninstalls packages so a virtual environment matches a compiled requirements.txt file. Project defaults can be set in .pip-tools.toml or pyproject.toml, and pip-compile can be used as a pre-commit hook. The tools support Linux, macOS and Windows, and the package requires Python 3.9 or later. One limitation is that compilation can produce different results across operating systems, Python versions and implementations, so users targeting multiple environments should compile separately for each. The backtracking resolver is the default; the legacy resolver is deprecated. pip-tools is distributed under the BSD License and is classified for developers and system administrators.
For and against
For
- Compiles requirements from common project configuration files.
- Synchronizes virtual environments to compiled requirements.
- Can generate hashes for pip hash-checking mode.
- Supports Linux, macOS and Windows.
- Free and distributed under the BSD License.
Against
- Requires Python 3.9 or later.
- Compilation can differ across target environments.
- Legacy resolver is deprecated.
- It does not provide environment management.
The verdict
pip-tools offers a focused workflow for compiling pinned requirements and aligning virtual environments with them. Cross-environment differences mean teams should compile separately for each target, and the package requires Python 3.9 or later.
Who it suits
It is for developers and system administrators who want to compile pinned pip requirements and synchronize virtual environments. It is relevant for projects targeting multiple operating systems or Python environments, provided requirements are compiled for each target.
