Picogen
What it is
Picogen is a free outdoor ray tracing system for creating and rendering large terrain scenes. It provides day and night illumination, detailed plant populations, procedural scene scripting in SSDF, and heightfield objects. Implemented rendering choices include Whitted-style rendering and path tracing. Materials include fully diffuse Lambertian and perfect mirror specular types, while Height-Slang programmable materials and shaders support terrain. A sun-sky global setting and yaw, pitch, and roll camera controls are listed as implemented. Picogen runs on Linux and Windows under GPL version 3 or later. Linux downloads include 32-bit and 64-bit packages for Debian, Ubuntu, and similar distributions, plus tarballs. Windows users can choose an installer or archives that run without installation. Source code is hosted on Savannah and Gitorious, with Git commands provided. A forum accepts questions and bug reports without signup, and a wiki supplies documentation. The roadmap still marks L-system plants, ambient occlusion, soft shadows, and a graphical interface as unimplemented.
For and against
For
- Free GPL-licensed terrain renderer
- Path tracing and Whitted rendering
- Procedural SSDF scene scripting
- Linux and Windows downloads
- Forum posting without signup
Against
- Graphical user interface is unimplemented
- Ambient occlusion is unimplemented
- Soft shadows are unimplemented
- L-system plants are unimplemented
The verdict
Picogen offers scriptable terrain construction and several implemented rendering and material systems at no cost. Its roadmap shows that important visual features and a GUI remain unfinished.
Who it suits
It suits users creating procedural terrain renders on Linux or Windows who are comfortable with script-based tools. The GPL license permits free use under its terms.
