Photo Curator
What it is
Photo Curator is a free, open-source tool for sorting large photo libraries and locating likely keepers. Its Cull feature groups images as Sharp, Soft (recoverable), or Blurry using a contrast-normalized sharpness measure. Dedup clusters near-duplicates using perceptual hashing, capture-time metadata, and ORB feature matching, then identifies the sharpest frame in each group. Rank scores photos for composition, lighting, focus, color, and contrast, and displays top selections with per-photo radar charts. The app reads JPEG, PNG, HEIC, HEIF, HIF, TIFF, BMP, WebP, and RAW formats supported by LibRaw. Processing runs locally: its server binds to 127.0.0.1, and the maker says photos are not uploaded. Files are not moved or deleted unless the user chooses an action. The GPS view can make optional requests for OpenFreeMap tiles. The offline Linux bundle is limited to x86_64 and requires glibc 2.28 or later; ARM and musl distributions are not covered by that bundle.
For and against
For
- Groups photos by sharpness into three categories
- Clusters near-duplicates and identifies the sharpest frame
- Scores composition, lighting, focus, color, and contrast
- Processes locally; photos are not uploaded
- Supports RAW formats handled by LibRaw
Against
- Offline Linux bundle supports x86_64 only
- Linux bundle requires glibc 2.28 or later
- ARM and musl distributions are not covered by that bundle
The verdict
Photo Curator brings culling, duplicate grouping, and keeper ranking to a local photo workflow. Its offline Linux bundle has specific architecture and library requirements.
Who it suits
Photo Curator suits photographers sorting large shoots who want to find sharp images and group similar frames. It is also suited to people who prefer local processing and choose when files are moved or rejected.
