pfSense · Austin, Texas · founded 2004
What it is
pfSense is a free, open-source FreeBSD distribution that provides firewall and router functions managed through a web interface. Its source code is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, and a package system lets users extend the base installation. Network functions covered in its documentation include routing, VLANs, multiple WAN connections, high availability, traffic shaping, and captive portal. VPN choices include IPsec, OpenVPN, and WireGuard; OpenVPN can authenticate against local users, LDAP, or RADIUS. The maker describes deployments on hardware, virtual machines, and public clouds, and lists AWS and Azure marketplaces, including US GovCloud regions. Netgate publishes security advisories and accepts vulnerability reports through its Security Team. Purchasable global support is available for self-installed software and virtual deployments. The free Community Edition is available as a download, while Plus support plans include options with limited or unlimited tickets. One installation caveat: the USB memstick installer overwrites the entire hard drive and does not support dual booting with another operating system.
