Ora2Pg
What it is
Ora2Pg is free, self-hosted software for assessing and moving database content to PostgreSQL. It scans Oracle databases, extracts structure or data, and generates SQL; the site also lists MySQL as a source and mentions MariaDB and Microsoft SQL Server migration. It can create database content reports and estimate the cost and difficulty of an Oracle migration. Exportable objects include tables, views, indexes, constraints, functions, triggers, procedures, and packages. Basic automatic conversion translates PL/SQL toward PL/pgSQL, but Oracle-specific code may need review and manual changes for PostgreSQL syntax. Data exports can cover a full database or rows selected with a WHERE clause, and Oracle BLOBs can be exported as PostgreSQL BYTEA. Other options include spatial geometry export to PostGIS, DBLINK export as Oracle FDW, and Pentaho Data Integrator XML generation. By default, Ora2Pg produces files for loading with psql; direct PostgreSQL import is also possible after configuring a connection. Oracle migrations require Perl 5.10 or later, DBI, and Oracle client libraries. Other sources require their corresponding drivers and client dependencies.
For and against
For
- Assesses Oracle migration cost and difficulty
- Exports schema objects and selected or full data
- Can export Oracle BLOBs as PostgreSQL BYTEA
- Supports PostGIS, Oracle FDW, and Pentaho XML outputs
Against
- Oracle migrations require Perl, DBI, and Oracle client libraries
- Generated Oracle-specific PL/SQL may need manual changes
- Other source databases require corresponding drivers and dependencies
The verdict
Ora2Pg provides several routes for assessing and exporting database structure and data to PostgreSQL. Plan for dependency setup and manual review of Oracle-specific code rather than assuming conversion is complete.
Who it suits
Ora2Pg suits teams planning a database move to PostgreSQL, especially those assessing Oracle migration scope or converting schema and data. It is aimed at users able to install and configure its required libraries and review converted code.
