OpenNetAdmin

What it is

OpenNetAdmin is an open-source IP address management system for tracking network information and supporting repeatable configuration work. Its records can cover DNS names, IP addresses, subnets, MAC addresses, IPv6, VLANs, DHCP pools, NAT and custom attributes. Administrators can maintain the inventory through an AJAX-enabled web interface or use a command-line interface for scripts and bulk tasks. The project describes the inventory as a manually maintained authoritative source that can drive network configuration, with discovery tools helping populate and audit it. Templates and backend processes can generate DNS, DHCP and router configurations, including for distributed servers. Other features include overlapping DNS views, configuration archives with syntax-highlighted comparisons, LDAP authentication, local authentication and user and group permissions. BIND-DLZ support lets BIND query the ONA database directly, and host actions can link to applications such as Splunk, Nagios, Cacti and Base. The core is licensed under GPLv2.0; some add-ons may have separate licenses. It is free and self-hosted, and installation requires a web server.

For and against

For

  • Tracks IPv6, DNS, VLANs, DHCP pools and NAT.
  • Web and command-line interfaces support different workflows.
  • Templates can generate DNS, DHCP and router configurations.
  • Configuration archives allow syntax-highlighted comparisons.
  • Core is open source and free.

Against

  • Requires self-hosting on a web server.
  • Only MySQL is stated as tested.
  • Puppet and MCollective integration are listed as in progress.

The verdict

OpenNetAdmin brings address inventory, network records and configuration generation together in a free, self-hosted system. Its manually maintained inventory model and the stated MySQL testing limit are relevant to deployment planning.

Who it suits

OpenNetAdmin suits network administrators in small or large organizations who need a self-managed inventory for address data and repeatable configuration tasks. It is most relevant to teams prepared to maintain the inventory and run the application on their own web server.
