openLooKeng
What it is
openLooKeng is an open-source data virtualization engine for analyzing information across separate data sources through a shared SQL interface. It supports in-place analytics, so sources can be connected without moving their data first. Its connector framework covers joint queries across relational databases, NoSQL systems, Hive, and MPP data warehouses; examples include MySQL, Oracle, HBase, Elasticsearch, and Kafka. Geographically distant clusters can participate in a query through hierarchical deployment and cross-region query-plan optimization.
Huawei describes interactive, batch, and streaming query scenarios, although the first version supports interactive queries. Listed capabilities include front scheduling, cross-source indexing, dynamic filtering, cross-source collaboration, and horizontal scaling. Coordinator active-active high availability is provided. The project is based on the open-source Presto SQL engine and is licensed under Apache License 2.0. It is free and self-hosted, with Linux installation scripts for single-node and multi-node deployments. Its code is hosted on Gitee and GitHub.
For and against
For
- Unified SQL interface for multiple data sources
- Queries data in place without migration
- Supports cross-region cluster queries
- Free under Apache License 2.0
Against
- First version supports interactive queries
- Multi-node installation script requires Java newer than 1.8.0_151
- Self-hosted Linux deployment requires operating it yourself
The verdict
openLooKeng is a free option for teams that need to query disparate data in place through SQL. Its self-hosted deployment and stated first-version query scope are important considerations.
Who it suits
It suits big-data developers who need SQL-based analysis across multiple sources or data centers without migrating data. Teams can deploy it themselves on Linux and extend connectivity through the connector framework.
