OpenLIT
What it is
OpenLIT is an open-source platform for tracing, evaluating, and managing large language model applications, with cost tracking built on OpenTelemetry. Its tracing can capture model calls, tools, and retrievals, with filters for user, session, cost, latency, and metadata. Evaluations can use an LLM judge, heuristics, or human review on live traffic or experiments. Prompt Hub provides versioning, dynamic variables, API retrieval, unlimited fetching, and AI-assisted improvement. OpenGround compares models for latency, tokens, and cost, including comparisons using a user's own key. For coding agents, monitoring covers sessions, costs, tokens, repository activity, and code impact. The project lists 56+ integrations across LLMs, agent frameworks, vector databases, and GPUs. It can be self-hosted with Docker Compose or Kubernetes Helm and accepts OTLP data. The Apache 2.0 project says self-hosting keeps prompts, traces, and secrets in the user's environment. The OSS plan is free and lists unlimited self-hosted usage, users, projects, and environments; a hosted Cloud plan is marked as coming soon.
For and against
For
- Traces model calls, tools, and retrievals.
- Evaluations support judge, heuristic, or human review.
- Prompt Hub offers versioning and API retrieval.
- Self-hosted OSS plan lists unlimited usage and users.
- Lists 56+ integrations.
Against
- Hosted Cloud plan is coming soon.
- OSS support is community-based on GitHub.
The verdict
OpenLIT brings tracing, evaluation, prompt management, and cost tracking together in an open-source platform. Its OSS plan supports self-hosting, while the hosted Cloud option has not launched.
Who it suits
OpenLIT suits developers who want to observe LLM applications, prompts, evaluations, and costs. Its self-hosted option may suit teams that want prompts, traces, and secrets kept in their environment.
