OpenBao
What it is
OpenBao is an open-source system for managing access to secrets and encryption, including API tokens, encryption keys, passwords, and certificates. Users operate it through a web UI, CLI, or HTTP API and deploy it themselves with packages, containers, binaries, source builds, or Helm for Kubernetes. OpenBao encrypts key/value secrets before storing them and can generate temporary credentials for Kubernetes and SQL databases, revoking them when leases expire. Leases can be renewed, and individual secrets or groups can be revoked. It can encrypt and decrypt data without retaining it, using centrally defined parameters. Authentication methods include GitHub, LDAP, and AppRole, with policies associated through tokens. Its storage security barrier uses AES-256-GCM and verifies authentication tags during decryption. High-availability configurations are supported. Installation documentation includes Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, and Windows options. Releases have GPG signatures, and SBOMs are available on GitHub Releases. Integrated Storage has a default maximum entry size of 1 MiB, configurable through max_entry_size.
For and against
For
- Free open-source software under MPL 2.0
- UI, CLI, and HTTP API access
- Dynamic secrets with lease-based revocation
- Supports high-availability configurations
- Kubernetes deployment through Helm
Against
- Self-managed deployment is required
- Integrated Storage defaults to a 1 MiB entry limit
- Storage backend control is outside the security model
- Memory analysis of a running instance is out of scope
The verdict
OpenBao combines secret storage, dynamic credentials, encryption, and policy-based authentication in a self-hosted system. Its operational boundaries and storage entry limit should be evaluated alongside deployment needs.
Who it suits
It suits organizations self-hosting credentials, encryption keys, and certificates across supported operating systems. Teams using Kubernetes, SQL databases, or listed authentication methods may find its deployment model relevant.
