Open3D

What it is

Open3D is a free, open-source library for developing software that works with 3D data. Its C++ and Python interfaces provide data structures and processing algorithms for tasks such as scene reconstruction and surface alignment, alongside physically based visualization and GPU acceleration for core operations. Open3D-ML adds tools for 3D machine-learning work, including semantic point-cloud segmentation, pretrained models, and training pipelines, with PyTorch or TensorFlow support. Developers can use a standalone viewer on Debian/Ubuntu, macOS, or Windows, or run web visualization from C++ or Python and view it in a browser through WebRTC. Supported inputs include depth-camera devices and recordings, RGB-D sequences, point clouds, and mesh files; listed exports include XYZ, PLY, PCD, STL, OBJ, GLTF, GLB, and FBX. Current Python packages support Python 3.10 through 3.14 on Ubuntu 22.04+, macOS 10.15+, and 64-bit Windows 10+. Open3D uses the MIT license and encourages research and commercial use with attribution.

For and against

For

  • Provides both C++ and Python interfaces.
  • Includes 3D processing and reconstruction algorithms.
  • Open3D-ML supports PyTorch and TensorFlow.
  • Exports include PLY, STL, OBJ, GLTF, and FBX.
  • The library is released under the MIT license.

Against

  • Linux PyPI wheels lack native TensorFlow support from v0.18 onward.
  • Remote web visualization uses HTTP by default.
  • Sensitive remote viewing requires SSL configuration.
  • Current Python packages list specific OS versions.

The verdict

Open3D offers a broad set of building blocks for 3D processing, visualization, and machine learning across C++ and Python. Developers should account for the Linux TensorFlow packaging limit and configure SSL before sensitive remote visualization.

Who it suits

Open3D suits developers building applications around 3D data, as well as researchers working with 3D processing or machine learning. Its open-source license also welcomes contributions and permits commercial use with attribution.
