Newt
What it is
Newt is a free, open-source file manager for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Its two-pane interface works with local and remote filesystems, connecting through SSH, containers, Kubernetes, WSL, and other named integrations. Remote sessions can run file operations, searches, terminals, and mounts on the remote host. Users can view, copy, move, delete, or edit files, as well as pack or reveal them. Archives including ZIP, TAR, compressed TAR, and CPIO can be opened as directories, even when nested or encrypted. Newt also browses ISO 9660 and UDF disc images without extracting them, and can mount S3 filesystems. Recursive searches cover filenames and content, with results shown in a pane linked to the underlying files. Keyboard shortcuts cover common operations, with configurable bindings and mouse controls available. Newt's backend uses Rust, its interface uses React and TypeScript, and packaging uses Tauri. Its source code is licensed under the GNU GPL v3.
