Neodisk
What it is
Neodisk is a free, open-source disk space analyzer for macOS and Linux. It displays storage through treemap, sunburst, and outline views, with zooming, folder drilling, fuzzy search, and keyboard navigation. Analysis tools identify the largest files, group files by type, show an age heatmap, and find duplicates using content-hash verification. Neodisk is read-only: available file actions reveal or show an item, open it, or copy its path, without changing or deleting files. Completed scans remain as snapshots that can be reopened. On macOS, a Changes tab records additions, deletions, renames, and size changes since the previous scan. Optional Google Drive access reads storage quota and metadata, not file contents. macOS requires version 14 or later on Apple silicon or Intel. Linux AppImages support x86_64 and ARM64, but Linux lacks duplicate and changes tabs, cloud-drive scanning, and incremental rescans.
For and against
For
- Treemap, sunburst, and outline storage views
- Read-only actions never modify or delete files
- Largest-file, type, age, and duplicate analysis
- Saved scan snapshots can be reopened
- No analytics, tracking, or data collection
Against
- macOS requires version 14 or later
- Linux rescans are always full scans
- Linux lacks duplicate and changes tabs
- Cloud-drive scanning is macOS-only
The verdict
Neodisk focuses on visual storage analysis while keeping file operations read-only. macOS offers the broadest feature set; Linux has fewer analysis and rescan capabilities.
Who it suits
Neodisk suits people who want a local, read-only view of storage usage on macOS or Linux. It is also relevant to users seeking open-source software with no analytics, tracking, or data collection.
